SmithWorks Back Office began from a simple observation: the owner of a small construction company is usually the one running payroll, on Sunday night at the kitchen table and with no one to call. He often has no idea what a job really costs him in wages until the CPA tells him months later. The national payroll companies sell him software and a help line. The local CPA doesn’t want the payroll work and loses money on it.
SmithWorks Back Office was formed in Florida in August 2026 as a solo practice to fill that gap. One rule shapes everything: no tax returns. Not personal, not business, not sales tax. This means the client’s accountant keeps their work, making every CPA in Polk County a referral partner instead of a competitor.
It’s payroll done right by a person you can call while your CPA stays whole.
Meet Brent Smith
I’ve spent thirty years running the numbers for other people’s companies. Most recently, I was in financial and operational analytics for a 35,000-employee health system in metro Atlanta, where I turned payroll, labor, and cost data into something a manager could act on. I’m a QuickBooks ProAdvisor with payroll certification, and I’ve run a web practice for small businesses on the side, so I know what it’s like to be the owner who does everything.
I moved to Winter Haven in 2026 to open SmithWorks Back Office and be closer to family. My daughter is in the Orlando area, and I have an aunt and cousins in Winter Haven and Tampa. Outside the business, I officiate high school football and basketball, which is where I learned that people trust the person who is consistent, shows up on time, and explains the call.
